Neal Williams didn't set out to build a company — he set out to do good work. A Detroit native with a General Contractor license and a belief that craftsmanship matters, he started Something New Painting & Renovation with a single home restoration. That was 27 years ago. What followed was built entirely on reputation.
No major advertising campaigns. No shortcuts. Just a crew that showed up on time, communicated honestly, and left every job better than they found it. Word spread from neighbor to neighbor, referral to referral until Something New became one of Detroit's most recognized names in residential and commercial renovation. Nearly 100 five-star reviews on HomeAdvisor tell part of the story. The other part is simpler: most of our new clients come from someone who's already worked with us.
A Company With a Conscience
In 2026, Neal and long-time client turned business partner Jeremy Tick of Grosse Pointe founded the From The Heart Foundation of Detroit. The mission is straightforward — provide free minor home repairs to Detroit residents in need. Ten percent of every dollar earned by Something New goes directly to From The Heart. For Neal, this wasn't a business decision. It was the natural extension of everything he already believed about what good work is for.
